On June 30, 2022, President of the National Assembly of Panama Crispiano Adames Navarro and Panamanian Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes met with visiting Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Latin American Affairs Qiu Xiaoqi respectively. The two sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations, pragmatic cooperation between the two countries, exchanges between legislative bodies, and other topics. Chinese Ambassador to Panama Wei Qiang attended the meetings. Panamanian Minister of Commerce and Industries Federico Alfaro Boyd, Minister Counselor for Public Health Affairs Eyra Ruiz, Minister Counselor for Agricultural Affairs Carlos Augusto Salcedo Zaldivar and Vice Minister of Public Works Librada De Frías were present when Foreign Minister Mouynes met with Qiu Xiaoqi.

Special Representative Qiu Xiaoqi said, in June 2017, China and Panama, bearing in mind the fundamental and long-term interests, established diplomatic relations on the basis of the one-China principle, thus opening a new chapter in the development of bilateral relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties five years ago, under the care and guidance of the two heads of state, bilateral relations have witnessed all-round and rapid development, and pragmatic cooperation has yielded fruitful results, benefiting the two countries and two peoples. China highly appreciates Panama's firm adherence to the one-China principle, and stands ready to work with Panama to uphold the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, carry forward the friendship between the two countries, make the pie of pragmatic cooperation bigger, and jointly draw a brighter blueprint for China-Panama relations.

Adames said, although Panama and China have not established diplomatic relations for a long time, the friendship between the two peoples is profound, and the Panamanian side will never forget the Chinese people's invaluable support for Panama's struggle for resuming the exercise of sovereignty over the Panama Canal. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties five years ago, bilateral relations have developed rapidly, and the ties of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes have closely linked the two countries and two peoples. The Panamanian side is ready to take the fifth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Panama and China as an opportunity to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China's legislative bodies, and boost the sustained and in-depth development of bilateral relations.

Mouynes said, the fruitful results achieved in the five years since the establishment of diplomatic relations have fully proved that the cooperation between the two countries enjoys great potential and broad prospects. She thanked China for providing invaluable support for Panama's economic and social development and its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Panama always stays committed to promoting Panama-China friendship, unswervingly adheres to the one-China principle, values China's market opportunities and international influence, and looks forward to deepening cooperation with China within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and keeping close coordination and collaboration in multilateral affairs, so as to elevate bilateral relations to new heights.
