Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries Affairs of the Chinese Government Qian Bo Visits Papua New Guinea

From March 5 to 7, 2023, Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries Affairs of the Chinese Government Qian Bo visited Papua New Guinea (PNG). He met respectively with PNG Prime Minister James Marape, PNG Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Justin Tkatchenko, and Secretary-General of PNG Ministry for Foreign Affairs Elias Wohengu. Chinese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Zeng Fanhua was present with others.

Qian Bo exchanged a wide range of in-depth views with the PNG side on bilateral relations, practical cooperation and other topics. He said that PNG is an important country in the Pacific island region, and China is ready to work with PNG to well implement important common understandings reached between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Marape at their meeting in Bangkok of Thailand in last November and a series of outcomes of State Councilor Wang Yi's visit to the South Pacific in last May, strengthen dialogue, exchanges and cooperation on all fronts, and advance the upgrade of the comprehensive strategic partnership between both countries.

The PNG side congratulated Qian Bo on being appointed as Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries Affairs of the Chinese Government and expressed welcome for his visit to PNG. They spoke highly of China's long-term support for PNG in its economic and social development, and emphasized that China is the most important development partner of PNG, and that the two countries have forged a special friendship on a path to common development. PNG will remain firmly committed to the one-China principle, render mutual support on issues concerning respective core interests, and deepen practical cooperation in economy and trade, investment and other fields, so as to deliver more tangible benefits to the two countries and two peoples.
