On October 21, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President of the French Constitutional Council and former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that China-France relations have maintained a high level of development. President Xi Jinping made a historic visit to France this year and celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries with President Emmanuel Macron, which has provided strategic guidance for the development of China-France and China-EU relations under the new circumstances. Both China and France adhere to independence, which aligns with the global trend toward a multipolar world and is conducive to world peace and stability.
Wang Yi said that China firmly supports free trade and is committed to upholding the world trading system. Some setbacks in China-EU economic and trade relations do not serve the interests of both sides. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the EU, from the perspective of overall and long-term interest, will work with China to find ways to address their respective concerns through negotiation and consultation.
Laurent Fabius said that in a volatile and complex world, it is essential to maintain the friendship between China and France. The stability of the relationship between China and France stands in stark contrast to the uncertainty of the global landscape. It is a tradition for French diplomacy to uphold independence and maintain friendly relations between the two countries. France has always opposed imposing one's will on others and advocates seeking proper solutions through dialogue and consultation.
The two sides also had an exchange of views on the Ukraine crisis and climate response.
