Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng Lodges Stern Representations with the US Embassy in China on the US Attack on a Chinese Unmanned Airship by Force

On February 5, 2023, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng lodged, upon instruction, stern representations with the US Embassy in China on behalf of the Chinese government on the US attack on a Chinese unmanned civilian airship by force.

Xie Feng stressed that the entry of the strayed Chinese unmanned civilian airship into US airspace is a purely unexpected accident caused by force majeure. The fact is crystal-clear and allows for no misrepresentation or smearing. However, the United States, turning a blind eye to the fact, has obstinately used force against the civilian airship that is leaving the US airspace, in an apparent act of overreaction and a serious violation of the spirit of international law and international practice. What the US has done has severely impacted and undermined the efforts and progress the two sides have made in stabilizing China-US relations since the Bali summit. The Chinese side hereby expresses its firm objection to and strong protest over this, and urges the United States not to take any further actions that may undermine China's interests or escalate or expand tensions. The Chinese government is closely following the developments of the situation, will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese company concerned and firmly defend China's interests and dignity, and reserves the right to make further responses if necessary.
