On May 25, 2023, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui held talks in Brussels respectively with Head of Cabinet of President Charles Michel of the European Council Frédéric Bernard and Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service Enrique Mora. The two sides exchanged views on a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, China-Europe relations and other issues.

Li Hui expounded on China’s position on and proposal for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, and emphasized that the “four musts” put forward by President Xi Jinping are the fundamental guidance for China to resolve the Ukraine crisis by political means. China always upholds an objective and just position on the Ukraine issue, and actively promotes talks for peace. China and the European Union (EU) share much consensus on the issue. China supports European countries in strengthening strategic autonomy, and making efforts to realize lasting peace and stability on the European continent. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, and China stands ready to work with the EU to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two sides, and respond to the uncertainty in the international situation with the stability of China-EU relations.

The EU officials spoke highly of China’s positive role in peacefully resolving the conflict, and expressed appreciation for relevant principles of the document of China's Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis. The EU believes that the EU and China have quite a few common interests on the Ukraine issue, and stands ready to work with China to increase consensus through cooperation, resolve disputes through dialogue, promote a peaceful settlement of the conflict, and realize lasting and just peace in Europe.
