2023-05-18 23:00

From May 16 to 17, 2023, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui visited Ukraine. During the visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Li Hui, and Li Hui held meetings respectively with Head of the Presidential Office of Ukraine Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and responsible officials of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Defence and other relevant departments. The two sides exchanged views on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and China-Ukraine relations, among other issues.

Both sides agreed that the recent phone call between President Xi Jinping and President Zelenskyy has set the direction for the development of China-Ukraine relations. The two countries should make joint efforts to continue the tradition of mutual respect and treating each other with sincerity, and continuously push forward mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

Li Hui elaborated on China's position and propositions on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, noting that President Xi Jinping has put forward "four points" about what must be done, "four things" the international community need to do together, and "three observations" regarding the crisis, which outlined China's fundamental approach to the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis. There is no panacea for defusing the crisis. It requires all parties to do their share, build up mutual trust, and create enabling conditions for a ceasefire and peace talks. Based on China's Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis, China will strive for the broadest common understanding in the international community on resolving the Ukraine crisis, and make its efforts for early ceasefire and restoration of peace. China has been playing a constructive role in easing the humanitarian situation in Ukraine in its own way, and will continue to provide help to Ukraine to the best of its ability.

The Ukrainian side expressed pleasure at hosting Special Representative Li Hui’s visit shortly after the phone call between the two heads of state. Ukraine values China's important role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in international affairs, and welcomes China's active role in ending the conflict and restoring peace. Ukraine has always stayed committed to the one-China principle and is ready to make joint efforts with China to continuously work for new and greater development of Ukraine-China relations.
