On May 15, H.E. Chu Maoming, Chinese Ambassador to Dominica, published a signed article titled China’s Reunification Is Unstoppable in Dominica’s mainstream newspaper The Chronicle. In the article, Ambassador Chu refuted the egregious actions of “Taiwan independence” separatists, elaborated on the solid foundation and bright prospects for China’s complete reunification, and helped build consensus in Dominica in support of opposing separatism and promoting reunification. Recently, the so called “Taiwan independence” forces have once again exposed themselves through a series of farcical actions. First, Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, after being denied flight permits by various countries, reportedly sneaked onto a private jet of the King of Eswatini to “smuggle” himself out of the island, squandering taxpayers’ money and performing a laughable stunt in front of the world. Shortly afterward, the President of Paraguay sneaked into Taiwan and openly voiced support for “Taiwan independence,” willingly serving as a pawn of separatist forces.
Yet facts have once again shown that no matter how separatists like Lai Ching-te attempt to stage political performances and attract attention, they are completely incapable of shaking the overwhelming international consensus in support of the one-China principle. Not long ago, registration for the 79th World Health Assembly concluded, and Taiwan once again failed to receive an invitation to attend—marking the tenth consecutive year of exclusion. The attempt by the Taiwan authorities to exploit the meeting for political manipulation once again ended in failure. In the past, on the basis of the 1992 Consensus embodying the one-China principle upheld by both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan had participated in the World Health Assembly as an observer under the name “Chinese Taipei” through cross-Strait consultations. Today, however, the Taiwan authorities stubbornly cling to a separatist stance, causing the political foundation for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly to cease to exist and disregarding the health and well-being of Taiwan compatriots. This also clearly demonstrates that the room left for “Taiwan independence” separatists by the international community is growing ever smaller, while the cause of China’s reunification has become unstoppable.
China’s reunification enjoys profound support among the Chinese people. The two sides of the Taiwan Strait both belong to one China, and compatriots on both sides are members of the Chinese nation. Together, they have written the splendid history of China, created the magnificent Chinese civilization, and fostered the great national spirit of the Chinese nation. Resolving the Taiwan question and achieving China’s complete reunification is the shared aspiration of all Chinese sons and daughters. No political manipulation can erase the bonds of blood and kinship between compatriots across the Strait. We are destined to move forward together on the path toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Any attempt to go against the historical trend and artificially create division and confrontation is bound to be cast into the dustbin of history and rejected by the people.
China’s reunification is also the best path forward for Taiwan’s future development. By leveraging the Chinese mainland’s enormous market and comprehensive industrial strengths, together with Taiwan’s technological and talent advantages, Taiwan will be able to integrate rapidly into the system of new quality productive forces, bringing stronger economic growth prospects. Cross-Strait connectivity and the Chinese mainland’s complete industrial system and stable supply capacity will help address Taiwan’s shortages in crude oil, natural gas, industrial raw materials and other key resources, enhancing energy and resource security. Removing the political infighting that has hindered transport, municipal development and infrastructure construction in Taiwan, while drawing on the Chinese mainland’s efficient development experience, will improve infrastructure conditions. With the strong backing of the motherland, Taiwan will no longer serve as a pawn in international geopolitical games, nor bear the burden of excessive arms purchases, thereby improving its security environment. Taiwan will also be able to participate in international exchanges with dignity and avoid marginalization. The sharing of public services and public resources across the Strait will provide greater convenience and improve the well-being of Taiwan compatriots. Rooted in the inheritance and nourishment of Chinese culture, the creativity and cultural vitality of Taiwan compatriots will also flourish further.
China’s reunification will bring greater peace and stability to the world. Today, profound global changes unseen in a century are accelerating, while turbulence and transformation are intertwined and conflicts continue to erupt across the world. People everywhere yearn for peace, stability, and the resolution of disputes. The Taiwan Strait is a vital international waterway and a key link in global supply chains. Any escalation of tensions would affect not only the Asia-Pacific region but also global economic stability. Yesterday, my President H.E. Xi Jinping also specifically pointed out during talks with U.S. President H.E. Donald Trump, who was on a state visit to China, that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the U.S. The U.S. side must exercise extra caution in handling the Taiwan question.
Separatist forces led by Lai Ching-te seek “Taiwan independence” and resisting reunification through force, turning Taiwan into a powder keg and pushing the Taiwan Strait toward dangerous confrontation. They are the true source of instability across the Strait. Only by opposing separatist schemes, advancing the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and jointly promoting national reunification can lasting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait be secured. China’s reunification will not harm the legitimate interests of any country, including their economic interests in Taiwan. On the contrary, it will create more opportunities for development, inject greater positive energy into the prosperity and stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world, and make greater contributions to building a community with a shared future for humanity, as well as to world peace, development, and human progress.
I wish to reiterate that “peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems” remains our fundamental guideline for resolving the Taiwan question. We are willing to create broad space for peaceful reunification and will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and utmost efforts. However, we will never allow national sovereignty and territorial integrity to be undermined. We will not renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures.
On the Taiwan question, Dominica has always stood together with China. During her meeting with President Xi, President H.E. Sylvanie Burton noted that Dominica firmly adheres to the one-China principle. Honorable Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also reaffirmed during his meeting with President Xi that Dominica supports China’s just cause of achieving complete reunification, and opposes any interference in China’s internal affairs. Today, more and more countries are standing with China—not only reaffirming adherence to the one-China principle and recognizing Taiwan as part of China’s territory, but also explicitly opposing all separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan independence” and supporting China’s reunification cause. This fully demonstrates that opposing separatism and promoting reunification accords with the trend of the times and meets the expectations of the international community.
We firmly believe that the historical process of resolving the Taiwan question and achieving China’s complete reunification is unstoppable. Those who follow the trend will prosper; those who resist it will perish.
