Han Nianlong

Mr. Han Nianlong, born in Renhuai County of Guizhou Province in May 1910, served as vice minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic ofChinafrom April 1964 to April 1982.

He had long been engaged in political work in the Army before the founding of the People's Republic.He was transferred to the Foreign Ministry in December 1949, then served as Chinese ambassador toPakistan(August 1951 to February 1956) andSweden(May 1956 to October 1958), assistant minister of Foreign Affairs and concurrently director-general of the General Office of the Foreign Ministry (from November 1958 to April 1964).As vice foreign minister, he was in charge of Asian affairs.He paid a visit toJapanin 1974 and signed the Sino-Japanese Agreement on Maritime Transport on behalf of the Chinese Government.In 1979, he held 15 rounds of talks with his Vietnamese counterpart and put forward 8 principled proposals on handling the Sin0-Vietmese relations.He also headed the Chinese delegation for the 34thGeneral Assembly of the United Nations in 1979.He attended the 1stSino-Japanese regular discussion of senior officials of foreign affairs authorities held inJapanin 1980.He held talks with senior officials of Indian foreign ministry on China-India border issue in 1981.He headed the Chinese diplomats delegation for a visit toThailandin 1982.

He assumed the post of President of the Chinese People'sInstituteofForeign Affairsin September 1983.
