On the afternoon of January 30, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Madrid for an official visit. Spain is the fourth leg of Premier Wen’s European tour.

At 4:35 pm, Wen’s special plane arrived at Madrid Barajas International Airport. Among those who greeted Wen and his delegation at the airport were Spanish government officials, as well as Minister of Culture Cai Wu, who had arrived earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Zhu Bangzao, and representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Spain, Chinese-funded institutions, overseas Chinese and Chinese students.

Upon his arrival, Wen said in a written statement that China and Spain enjoy a time-honored friendship, and bilateral cooperation in various fields has been expanding steadily. With mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples constantly growing, the foundation of the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership has been consolidated continuously, said the Chinese premier. Wen said he was pleased with the smooth growth of the bilateral ties between the two nations and had full confidence in the prospect of China-Spain relations.

China highly values its relations with Spain and recognizes its important status and role in European and international affairs, Wen said. He added that he hoped to exchange views with the Spanish leaders on bilateral ties and global issues of common concerns and broadly engage with Spanish people from all walks of life. China is ready to work with Spain to boost the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership to a new high, Wen said.

During his visit, Wen will hold talks with his Spanish counterpart Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and meet with Spanish King Juan Carlos. He will also attend a culture exchange conference.

Premier Wen arrived in Madrid after concluding his official visit to the European Union headquarters.
