On March 20, 2013, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Leung Chun-ying in Beijing.

Mr. Leung thanked the Foreign Ministry for its long-standing support for Hong Kong as well as the serious efforts the Ministry has made in protecting the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong people abroad. He said that Hong Kong people are proud that their motherland is enjoying a rising international status and anticipate new achievements in the country’s diplomatic work. Leung also pledged that the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is ready to further strengthen its cooperation and exchanges with the Foreign Ministry and make contribution to China’s diplomatic work.

Wang Yi extended his welcome to Leung in his first visit to the Foreign Ministry after assuming the office of Hong Kong Chief Executive, and thanked Leung and the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for their great support for the Ministry. He said that only when the motherland is strong and prosperous can Hong Kong have a brighter future. The Foreign Ministry is willing to join hands with Hong Kong compatriots and strive for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation so that the Chinese people can enjoy the dignity and glory of a great nation in the international community. Wang pledged that the Foreign Ministry will continue to strengthen exchanges and communications with the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, support Hong Kong in conducting foreign exchanges and cooperation in accordance with its Basic Law, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong people abroad.

In addition, the Foreign Minister briefed Mr. Leung on China’s foreign policy, saying that the priority of China’s diplomacy is the creation of a friendly external environment as the country is making unremitting efforts to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and achieve the goals of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects when the Communist Party of China celebrates its centenary and turn China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious when the People's Republic of China marks its centennial. The Foreign Ministry will faithfully implement the foreign policies and guidelines endorsed at the 18th CPC National Congress, always hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation and win-win results, explore and promote a diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, and, amidst the complex and volatile international and regional situations, safeguard world peace, promote common development, uphold international justice, and bear due responsibility.
