On August 3, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with visiting Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Laos are close and friendly neighbors. Both countries have shared the same strategic orientation, mutual understanding and support, and enjoyed solid cooperation foundation as well as broad development space since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Laos 55 years ago. China firmly adheres to friendly policies towards Laos, and regards the country as a good neighbor, good friend, good comrade and good partner in this region. China is fully confident of the development prospect of China-Laos relations.

Wang Yi expressed that leaders of both countries have reached important consensus on promoting bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership since the beginning of this year. China is willing to, together with Laos, well implement the consensus of both leaders, make full preparations for high-level exchanges, including President Bounnhang Vorachith's attendance at the G20 Hangzhou Summit in China, and well integrate development strategies of both countries, so as to elevate bilateral relations to a new level. Both sides should accelerate the consultation on and the signing of guidelines on boosting cooperation in the construction of the “Belt and Road” and other important cooperation documents, and speed up the construction of China-Laos railway by striving for the full-scale construction at an early date, so as to build it into a landmark project of China-Laos friendship. China stands ready to enhance cooperation with Laos in such areas as economic zones, border trade, energy and infrastructure construction, and well build livelihood projects including hospitals, schools and conference centers in Laos. Both sides should strengthen cooperation in law enforcement and security, advance the construction of the law enforcement and security cooperation mechanism in Mekong River and combat transnational crimes. Both countries need to deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and make the series of activities celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations a success.

Saleumxay Kommasith agreed with Wang Yi's suggestions on advancing bilateral cooperation, and expressed that this year coincides with the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and China, which is of great significance in the history of bilateral relations. President Bounnhang Vorachith looks forward to attending the G20 Hangzhou Summit in China. China has offered sincere support and assistance to Laos for a long time, and has focused on economic and social development as well as people's well-being in its cooperation with Laos all the time. Laos has always attached high importance to and actively promoted the development of bilateral relations. Laos is willing to spare no efforts in implementing the consensus of both leaders with China, enhance cooperation in infrastructure construction, facilitate the construction of Laos-China railway to achieve progress, and expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges as well as law enforcement and security cooperation.

Both sides agreed that since this year is the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-ASEAN dialogue relations, the two sides should well hold the commemorative summit marking the 25th anniversary of dialogue relations, push the summit for positive outcomes and send the positive signal that both sides are devoted to building a closer China-ASEAN community of common destiny. Lancang-Mekong cooperation has achieved positive progress. Both countries will join hands to well construct the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism, so as to push forward the development of China-ASEAN relations. The two countries should also jointly boost the healthy and stable development of East Asia cooperation.
