2017-03-19 15:43

On March 19, 2017, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US.

Xi Jinping pointed out that at present, the development of China-US relations faces important opportunities. I have maintained sound communications with President Donald Trump through telephone calls and messages. Both of us agreed that the two countries could absolutely be good cooperation partners. As long as both sides stick to the greatest common divisor, the development of bilateral relations could enjoy correct direction. It is hoped that the two sides, in the light of the consensus and spirit reached by me and President Donald Trump to enhance exchanges at high level and various levels, expand cooperation in bilateral, regional and global levels, and properly address and control sensitive issues, so as to push bilateral relations for healthy and stable development at a new starting point.

Xi Jinping stressed that China-US relations are important for both countries and the world. Both sides should well grasp the direction for the development of China-US relations in the spirit of being responsible for history and future generations. The two countries need to strengthen strategic mutual trust and mutual understanding. The common interests between the two countries far outweigh the differences, and cooperation is the only correct choice for the two sides. The two countries should view bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective and expand cooperation fields, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. Both countries should enhance communication and coordination in regional hotspot issues, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and safeguard a stable general situation of China-US relations. China and the US should encourage and expand friendly exchanges between the two peoples to continuously consolidate the social foundation of bilateral relations.

Rex Tillerson conveyed President Donald Trump's greetings to President Xi Jinping, and expressed that President Donald Trump attaches high importance to phone contact with President Xi Jinping, and looks forward to holding the meeting between both heads of state at an early date and the opportunity to visit China, in a bid to chart the course for the development of US-China relations in the next 50 years. The US side is willing to develop relations with China based on the spirits of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, continuously increase mutual understanding, reinforce bilateral coordination and cooperation, and jointly deal with challenges facing the international community.

Xi Jinping asked Rex Tillerson to convey greetings to President Donald Trump, and welcomed him to visit China.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and other people attended the meeting.
