On May 11, 2017, President Xi Jinping held telephone talks with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Congratulating Moon Jae-in on his election as President of the ROK, Xi Jinping pointed out that as close neighbors, both China and the ROK are important countries in the region. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 25 years ago, China-ROK relations have made great achievements, which are worth cherishing. Both sides should stay true to the original commitments when we establish diplomatic relations, respect each other's major concerns and legitimate interests, strive to seek common ground while shelving differences, and properly handle disputes. It is hoped that the new ROK government could value China's relevant major concerns, and take practical actions to push bilateral relations for a healthy and stable development. To realize a better development of bilateral relations is not only in line with the common interests of our two peoples, but also conducive to regional peace, stability and development.

Xi Jinping stressed that for a long time, China has always been firmly adhering to realizing the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, safeguarding the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, and addressing the issues through dialogue and consultation, which conforms to the common interests of the two countries as well as the general situation of regional peace and stability. China is willing to, together with all relevant parties including the ROK, continue to make efforts for peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and the region.

Moon Jae-in expressed that he agreed with President Xi Jinping's assessment on bilateral relations. Highly valuing the ROK-China relations as China does, the ROK stands ready to make joint efforts with China to develop bilateral relations at a high-level and advance the practical strategic cooperative partnership. Fully understanding China's relevant major concerns, he said that the new ROK government will actively communicate with China in this regard and make efforts to seek proper solutions. The ROK stands ready to work together with China to realize the goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through such means as restarting the six-party talks at an early date. The country appreciates China's "Belt and Road" initiative, and expects that the "Belt and Road" construction could bring development and prosperity to countries and regions along the routes, including China and the ROK.

The two heads of state agreed to maintain contact and look forward to meeting each other at an early date.

During the telephone talks, Xi Jinping extended condolences to 10-odd Chinese and ROK child victims in the traffic accident in Weihai of Shandong a few days ago. Xi Jinping also asked Moon Jae-in to convey his sympathies to parents of the ROK child victims. Moon Jae-in thanked Xi Jinping for his sympathies as well as the Chinese government for rapidly taking actions to properly deal with the accident and its aftermath.
