On June 6, 2019 local time, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of Russia in Moscow.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia. The relations between the two countries have maintained high-level development, and have become a major-country relationship featuring the highest degree of mutual trust, the highest level of coordination and the highest strategic value, thus making important contributions to world peace, stability and development. Currently, China-Russia relations have entered a new era, and the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia has been continuously enriched. Amid complicated international situation, particularly in the face of some illicit moves curbing the development of emerging market countries, a stronger comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia is of great significance to safeguarding the interests of the two countries and peoples, as well as to world peace, stability and prosperity.

Xi Jinping stressed that the two sides should make persistent efforts to promote the sustained and in-depth cooperation in various fields, bring more benefits to the two peoples and inject more powerful impetus into the development and rejuvenation of China and Russia. The two sides also need to strengthen cooperation within the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the BRICS and the G20 and on other multilateral affairs, in a bid to contribute more China-Russia options to the international community.

Dmitry Medvedev said that the two heads of state signed a statement yesterday, announcing that Russia-China relations have entered a new era, which is of great significance. Currently, some individual countries, regardless of the consequences, have blatantly violated the international law and the basic norms governing international relations, willfully imposed sanctions on other countries and suppressed enterprises of other countries, which has hindered global economic growth and jeopardized the development of international trade. Such acts are short-sighted and destructive. Russia and China should strengthen strategic cooperation, jointly deal with the common challenges facing the two countries and the international community, and earnestly safeguard world peace and development. The Russian side is willing to work with the Chinese side to fully implement the important cooperation consensus reached by the two heads of state, including the alignment of the Eurasian Economic Union with the Belt and Road Initiative, via such mechanisms as the regular meetings between the two countries’ prime ministers.
