Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh Meets with Wang Yi

On November 18, 2017 local time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Prime Minister's Office.

Sheikh Hasina congratulated on the complete success of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and asked Wang Yi to convey her warm regards and sincere respects to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. Sheikh Hasina expressed that Bangladesh and China enjoy a traditional friendship. Bangladesh thanks China for offering long-term support and assistance to Bangladesh's development and construction. Last year, President Xi Jinping paid a historic visit to Bangladesh, establishing the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries. Bangladesh is willing to continuously further deepen practical cooperation with China in all fields under the guidance of the strategic cooperative partnership so as to elevate bilateral relations to new highs.

Conveying President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang's greetings to Sheikh Hasina, Wang Yi expressed that China and Bangladesh are good friends and good partners. China is willing to continuously work with Bangladesh to firmly support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns as well as deepen China-Bangladesh strategic cooperative partnership. Both sides should accelerate the construction of the Road and Belt Initiative and actively push forward the building of Bangladesh-China-India–Myanmar Economic Corridor. In the meantime, both sides should explore new cooperation areas such as maritime cooperation according to bilateral agreement. China will continue encouraging and supporting Chinese enterprises to actively participate in the national construction of Bangladesh as well as providing assistance to Bangladesh within its due capacity, so as to improve Bangladesh's capability for independent development.

Regarding the issue of the Rohingya people, Sheikh Hasina expressed that recently, Bangladesh and Myanmar have reached an agreement through bilateral negotiations on repatriating the Rohingya people who crossed the border into Bangladeshi territory. It is hoped that such agreement will help stabilize the situation at an early date and the problem will be eventually solved. Bangladesh thanks China for the timely humanitarian aid for the country, lauds China's stance on this issue and hopes that China will continue playing an important part in promoting the settlement of the issue.

Wang Yi noted that China has always maintained that the issue of Rohingya people should be solved by Bangladesh and Myanmar through dialogue and consultation and welcomed the expected signing of an agreement on the repatriation of the Rohingya people. It is hoped the agreement will be signed as scheduled and put into effect at an early date. The international community should provide favorable conditions and create a sound environment for the efforts of Bangladesh and Myanmar. China is willing to continuously offer assistance and convenience for a proper settlement of the issue.
