On October 31, 2018, Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou visited Brunei, during which he met with Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Dato Seri Paduka Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof of Brunei, exchanging views on China-Brunei relations as well as regional and international issues of common concern.
Kong Xuanyou expressed that China and Brunei enjoy long-term good-neighborly and friendly relations. As this year marks the 5th anniversary of the establishment of China-Brunei strategic cooperative relations, the Chinese side is willing to, together with the Bruneian side, take it as an opportunity to further intensify high-level exchanges, advance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and elevate bilateral relations to new highs. Attaching importance to Brunei's unique role in regional affairs, the Chinese side is willing to work with the Bruneian side to intensify communication, deepen the relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asia cooperation, support the Bruneian side in forging the hub of the East ASEAN Growth Area, and jointly promote peace and stability in the South China Sea and the region.
Dato Seri Paduka Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof noted that the Bruneian side highly values its relations with China, firmly adheres to the one-China policy, supports the Belt and Road Initiative and stands ready to constantly deepen mutual trust and cooperation as well as elevate bilateral relations with the Chinese side. The Bruneian side welcomes the Chinese side to enhance cooperation with the East ASEAN Growth Area, and appreciates the positive progress of the negotiation on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. The Bruneian side will make joint efforts with the Chinese side to well hold this year's series of Leaders' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation and maintain the sound momentum of regional peace and development.
