On August 8, 2024, the 11th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Senior Officials' Meeting was held via video link. The meeting was co-chaired by Senior Official and Vice Foreign Minister of China Sun Weidong and Senior Official of Thailand Rujikorn Saengchantr, as the co-chair countries, with senior officials from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam in attendance. The six sides reviewed the progress of the LMC and had an in-depth exchange of views mainly on the next direction of cooperation and preparations for the Ninth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, among others.
Sun Weidong said, this year marks the beginning of the implementation of the second Five-Year Plan of Action on LMC. The six countries have earnestly delivered on the important common understandings reached at the Fourth LMC Leaders' Meeting and the Eighth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, actively expanded cooperation in various fields, achieved fruitful results, and strongly promoted peace, stability, development and prosperity in the Lancang-Mekong region.
Sun Weidong introduced the important contents and outcomes of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, saying that in a turbulent and evolving world, China will follow the guiding principles of the plenum to further deepen reform comprehensively and promote Chinese modernization. China is ready to deepen solidarity and cooperation with Mekong countries, jointly promote regional connectivity and green and innovative development, jointly address non-traditional security challenges, make the region an exemplar for Belt and Road cooperation, a pacesetter for implementing the Global Development Initiative, a pioneer for implementing the Global Security Initiative and a front runner for implementing the Global Civilization Initiative, and accelerate the building of a Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future.
All parties extended congratulations on the successful convening of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, spoke highly of the substantial progress of the LMC since its launch eight years ago, and thanked the LMC Special Fund for its important support to the countries' economic development and improvement of people's livelihood. They all expressed their willingness to enhance political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, and jointly implement the second Five-Year Plan of Action for the benefit of the people in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin.
