Spokesperson on the question of the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders

2000-11-15 14:15
Q:The Cambodian Government has for quite some time expressed strong displeasure over the application of pressure and interference in its internal affairs by some international forces over the question of the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders. What is your comment?

A: China has always been of the view that the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders is the internal affairs of Cambodia. The Cambodian Government and people should make their own judgement and decisions independent of any external pressure or interference. We support the legitimate demands of the Cambodian Government. The international community should respect the state sovereignty and judicial independence of Cambodia, in stead of imposing the will of an individual country on the Cambodian Government and people. The peace and stability that Cambodia enjoys today have not come by easily. The pressing task facing Cambodia, as has been repeatedly pointed out by its leaders, is to continue to consolidate the achievements of national reconciliation and improve the living standards of its people by dedicating its attention to economic development. It is inadvisable to take any move in the name of the trial that may trigger once again national conflicts in Cambodia. It will not only be against the fundamental interests of the Cambodian people, but will also have serious adverse impact on peace and stability in the region.
