On December 21, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with visiting Union Minister for Border Affairs Ye Aung of Myanmar.

Wang Yi expressed that linked by mountains and rivers, and sharing a common destiny, China and Myanmar are comprehensive strategic cooperative partners. Not long ago, President Xi Jinping respectively met with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar, which charted the course for the development of China-Myanmar relations in the new era. Both sides should intensify coordination and well implement the high-level consensus, so as to elevate China-Myanmar relations to new highs.

Wang Yi noted that China supports Myanmar to push ahead with its domestic peace process and supports all parties of Myanmar to adhere to the "Panglong Spirit" to reach political consensus featuring national unity and a high degree of autonomy under the framework of the Constitution of the Union of Myanmar at an early date. Both sides should make good use of the China-Myanmar 2+2 High-level Consultations between the Foreign Ministries and Defence Ministries to jointly safeguard peace and stability in border areas. China also supports Myanmar's effort in maintaining peace and stability in the Rakhine State, and is willing to continuously play a constructive role in properly dealing with the Rakhine State issue between Myanmar and Bangladesh through bilateral consultation.

Wang Yi pointed out that addressing the Northern Myanmar issue and the Rakhine State issue fundamentally depends on development. China has put forward jointly building China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, forming an overall cooperation pattern with three-end and tripod support including the China-Myanmar Border Economic Cooperation Zone, the Yangon New City and the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone. It receives positive response from Myanmar. It is hoped that both sides will step up the alignment work and scientific appraisal, make construction plans for the Corridor as soon as possible and strive to achieve visible fruits, in a bid to boost overall development of Myanmar including the Northern Myanmar and the Rakhine areas.

Ye Aung expressed that Myanmar highly values developing its relations with China and is ready to jointly well implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries with China. Myanmar thanks China for offering support and assistance to Myanmar's domestic peace process and is willing to jointly well safeguard stability in the Myanmar-China border areas with China. Myanmar fully agrees with China on the three-phase solution to address the Rakhine State issue, and will intensify coordination with relevant parties to start personnel repatriation as soon as possible. Myanmar is willing to work with China to jointly build the Myanmar-China Economic Corridor to boost development in the border areas of Myanmar.
