On December 16, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Luang Prabang Province of Laos with Union Minister for International Cooperation U Kyaw Tin of Myanmar, who was attending the fourth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Wang Yi said China and Myanmar share the "Paukphaw" friendship. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Myanmar traditional friendship has always been inherited and carried forward. The Chinese side will continue to be Myanmar's reliable cooperative partner, intensify bilateral high-level exchanges, and strengthen cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative in a bid to constantly enrich the connotation of China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic cooperation.

Wang Yi pointed out that both sides should positively implement the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on China-Myanmar Economic Corridor cooperation, further improve the corridor planning and steadily advance major cooperation projects. The Chinese side supports the Myanmar side in properly solving the Northern Myanmar issue in the Panglong Spirit and hopes that the Myanmar side will jointly safeguard peace and stability in the China-Myanmar border area. On the Rakhine State issue, it is hoped that the Myanmar side could maintain communication and cooperation with the Bangladeshi side to realize the repatriation of the first group of people as soon as possible. The Chinese side is willing to continue the necessary support to this end and relevant agencies of the United Nations should also play a constructive role. As Myanmar is where the LMC was initiated, the Chinese side will work with the Myanmar side to make good use of this platform, joining hands to promote development and prosperity of the sub-region.

U Kyaw Tin noted that the Myanmar side is satisfied with the development of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between Myanmar and China. Bilateral relations are at the best period in history. State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi will attend the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in China. The Myanmar side has set up a particular committee for Belt and Road cooperation to promote cooperation in various fields under the framework of the initiative. The Myanmar side is committed to resolving the issues concerning its domestic peace and stands ready to strengthen communication with all parties at the same time to push for the early return of the displaced people to the Rakhine State. The Myanmar side appreciates the strong support from the Chinese side in this regard. The LMC mechanism has brought well-being to people of all countries in the region. The Myanmar side looks forward to deepening communication and cooperation with the Chinese side under the mechanism.
