On June 7, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked about China's principled position on the current situation in Myanmar when chairing the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between China and ASEAN.

Wang Yi said, Myanmar is a member of the ASEAN family. China supports ASEAN in playing a constructive role in properly handling Myanmar's domestic issues, and supports the gradual implementation of the "five-point consensus" within the framework of ASEAN. China is a close neighbor of Myanmar linked by mountains and rivers and the situation in Myanmar has a direct bearing on China's interests. China pays close attention to the situation in Myanmar and stands ready to continue to play a constructive role in its own way.

Wang Yi said, China and ASEAN hold the same position and views on the Myanmar issue in general. We are willing to continue to work with ASEAN to jointly urge all parties in Myanmar to put the interests of the people first, and keep calm to eliminate all kinds of violence. We encourage all parties in Myanmar to engage in political dialogue within the constitutional and legal framework and restart the process of democratic transformation; we will jointly provide assistance for Myanmar in fighting the pandemic, curbing the spread of the pandemic in Myanmar and safeguarding the lives and health of its people. We will jointly support Myanmar's efforts to restore its economy, improve people's livelihood and ensure the rights and interests of people at the grass-roots level. We will jointly urge all countries to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and avoid unilateral sanctions and undue interference. Wang Yi said, the above-mentioned "five points" are what China and ASEAN can do and are of great importance to Myanmar. They are interrelated and parallel, without confliction, and they are adaptable to the current situation and the future, which should become the consensus and direction of our efforts.
