On June 27, 2022, Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao attended and addressed the online launch ceremony of the Third ASEAN-China "Friendship and Cooperation" Short Video Contest. More than 100 people, including Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Myanmar U Chan Aye, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Ekkaphab Phanthavong, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to ASEAN Deng Xijun, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to ASEAN U Aung Myo Myint, responsible persons of Chinese hosts, permanent representatives of ASEAN countries to ASEAN, and representatives of diplomats, Chinese and foreign media and social media attended the ceremony. The ceremony was broadcast live on Facebook, Twitter, Douyin, Sina, Xuexi Qiangguo and other Chinese and foreign new media platforms, with a combined 13 million views online.

Wu Jianghao said, China and ASEAN countries, linked by mountains and rivers and enjoying cultural affinity, are natural cooperation partners and close friendly neighbors. Since the establishment of dialogue relations in 1991, China-ASEAN relations have achieved leapfrog development, and pragmatic cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results, benefiting 2 billion people in 11 countries of both sides and vigorously promoting regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Wu Jianghao pointed out, the Short Video Contest, which provides a brand-new perspective and platform for understanding China-ASEAN friendly cooperation, has attracted broad participation by people from all over the world, especially young friends. Tens of thousands of entries fully demonstrate the richness and vitality of China-ASEAN relations, and also reflect the great enthusiasm of the people of both sides to dedicate themselves to China-ASEAN friendly cooperation.

Wu Jianghao stressed, in November last year, President Xi Jinping and leaders of ASEAN countries jointly announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new milestone in the history of China-ASEAN relations. President Xi Jinping's proposal to build a peaceful, safe and secure, prosperous, beautiful and amicable home together has received positive responses from ASEAN countries. It is a beautiful vision of the 2 billion people in China and ASEAN to build a peaceful, safe and secure, prosperous, beautiful and amicable home together, which calls for further pooling wisdom of all walks of life on both sides, stimulating the innovation vitality of the general public, and pooling powerful strengths of people-to-people ties.

Wu Jianghao put forward three suggestions: First, strengthen the pattern of great exchanges. Before the pandemic, up to 60 million visits were made annually between China and ASEAN. Large-scale and all-round personnel exchanges are an important advantage of China-ASEAN relations. It is important to strengthen planning and preparation, resume personnel exchanges as soon as possible after the pandemic is under control, and promote closer interaction and exchanges in various fields such as culture, tourism, think tanks, media, women and sports, as well as at sub-national levels. Second, focus on promoting mutual understanding and affinity among young people. As the future and hope of China-ASEAN lie in young people, we need to pay more attention to enhancing the exchanges and understanding among Generation Z, and inherit and carry forward the traditional friendship between China and ASEAN. China will actively support the Year of ASEAN Youth this year, implement leading projects such as the Young Leaders Scholarship, and encourage more outstanding young people of ASEAN to study in China. Third, strive for greater inclusiveness and more mutual learning. The culture and customs of China and ASEAN, similar and colorful, are our common valuable treasure. We should uphold the diversity of our civilizations, derive inspiration from the collision of diverse civilizations, and enhance friendship by seeking inclusive co-existence, thus adding new vitality and impetus to the development of China-ASEAN relations.

Wu Jianghao hopes that the Short Video Contest will become increasingly stronger and bigger, further expand its coverage and influence, and do a good job in recording, telling and spreading the friendship stories between China and ASEAN. He expects that the contestants will present more truthful, multi-dimensional, colorful and vivid works, inspire and encourage more ordinary people in China and ASEAN, and jointly contribute strengths to building a peaceful, safe and secure, prosperous, beautiful and amicable home together.

The guests attending the ceremony spoke highly of the Short Video Contest. They hold that cultural and people-to-people exchanges are a "stabilizer" and "lubricant" for ASEAN-China relations. The Short Video Contest provides a platform for people of both sides, especially young people, to tell the story of China-ASEAN friendship by using digital technology. That's in line with the needs of the digital age. They believe that the contest will further enhance mutual understanding between the people of both sides, promote people-to-people ties between China and ASEAN, and contribute to building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.

The Third ASEAN-China "Friendship and Cooperation" Short Video Contest was co-hosted by the Mission of the People's Republic of China to ASEAN, the National Radio and Television Administration of China, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to ASEAN, the China International Communications Group, the ASEAN Secretariat, the Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the China Public Diplomacy Association, and the People's Government of Wuxi Municipality. The first contest was held in 2020. The first and second contests received a total of more than 51,000 entries from China and ASEAN countries. The entries have recorded a combined 320 million views on Chinese and foreign social media platforms, of which 20 million views went to award-winning works.
