A Hong Kong Cargo Ship Saved by the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar

2000-11-15 14:15
On the night of July 29, a Hong Kong cargo ship "Chu Hong", which is under the care of Qingchuan Shipping Company of Hubei Province, was followed by pirates on the open sea near Myanmar on its route from Bangladesh to Singapore. The 24 Chinese seamen on board were in a critical condition. When the Chinese embassy in Myanmar learnt of this event, an emergency group was immediately established to deal with the situation. Due to failure to contact with Marine Search Center of Myanmar, the embassy decided to ask for help from the armed forces of Myanmar and maintained hotline contact with Chinese Marine Search Center and Qingchuan Company of Hubei so as to be informed of the latest developments, keep in touch with the sides involved, and be ready with an operation plan. The Myanmar military, based upon the request from our embassy, immediately sent a naval vessel to the spot. After hours of efforts, the cargo ship was finally saved as day broke and escorted to safety by the Myanmar naval vessel.
