Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Speaks on the Phone with Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the ROK Foreign Ministry Kim Gunn

On June 9, 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming had a phone call with Kim Gunn, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The two sides exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim Gunn briefed Liu Xiaoming of the ROK’s stance on the Korean Peninsula issue and expressed the new ROK administration’s willingness to keep the door of dialogue with the DPRK open and continue to work for improved inter-Korean relations. He said that the ROK values China’s important role in addressing the Peninsula issue and hopes to maintain communication and cooperation with China.

Liu Xiaoming congratulated Kim Gunn on assuming the new post. He pointed out that relevant parties should stay cool-headed, exercise restraint and send more messages for deescalation. China supports the ROK and the DPRK in improving relations and will continue to play a constructive role for the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

The two sides agreed to stay in contact.
