On 15 November 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming and Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Kim Gunn had a virtual meeting at the request of the latter.

Liu Xiaoming brief Kim Gunn on the major outcomes and significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and stated China’s position on the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula. Liu stressed that the parties concerned must squarely recognize the crux of the Peninsula issue and work to address each other’s concerns, especially the legitimate concerns of the DPRK, in a balanced manner. He expressed hope that the parties concerned will stay committed to political settlement, maintain overall stability on the Peninsula, and prevent a spiral of escalation. Liu said that China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

Kim Gunn expressed appreciation for the briefing on the 20th CPC National Congress. He shared the ROK’s views on the latest developments on the Peninsula and affirmed that the ROK will keep communication with China on the Peninsula issue.
