Wang Yi:China-Iran Relations to Open up New Prospects and Enter New Stage

On September 15, 2015, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran held talks and then jointly met the press in Beijing.

Wang Yi expressed that as a major country in the Middle East, Iran plays an important and unique role in the region and the Islamic world. China highly values Iran and China-Iran relations. Since the beginning of this year, leaders of both countries have held multiple meetings and thus charted the course for the development of bilateral relations. The comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue has been reached, and under this background, China-Iran relations will open up new prospects and enter a new stage.

The two Foreign Ministers agreed to launch the consultation on establishing bilateral strategic partnership thus elevate the positioning of bilateral relations, and held that China's "Belt and Road" initiatives and Iran's development strategy could be docked and that the two countries should explore cooperation in international production capacity and other emerging fields while deepening cooperation in such traditional sectors as energy and infrastructure, and boost cooperation in law enforcement, security, counter-terrorism and the like.

Wang Yi stressed that it is very important to stick to the principles of synchronization and reciprocity and accommodating concerns of all sides in implementing the comprehensive agreement. China will fulfill its own responsibilities and honor its political commitments thus continue contributing to the smooth implementation of the agreement.

Mohammad Javad Zarif said that China is one of the most important cooperative partners of Iran. Bilateral relations kept a positive development when Iran was in difficulties and will only enjoy a faster, broader and better development after reaching the agreement. Iran appreciates China's long-lasting and important constructive role in reaching and implementing the agreement, and hopes to enhance high-level exchanges with China and facilitate bilateral coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs.

Both sides exchanged in-depth views on regional hotspot issues including situations in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
