Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari of Iraq

On the evening of 17 December, 2015 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in New York with Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari of Iraq.

Wang Yi expressed that currently China and Iraq enjoy sound relations. China understands Iraq's legitimate and reasonable claims on such issues as safeguarding national security and progressing economic reconstruction. China is willing to try its best to continue supporting Iraq in realizing its peace, security and economic reconstruction, and is also willing to witness Iraq playing its due part in regional stability and development. China is willing to work with Iraq to strengthen high-level exchanges and develop production capacity cooperation, so as to promote China-Iraq relations to a new stage. China also hopes that Iraq could provide strong security guarantee for Chinese personnel participating in construction of relevant projects in the country.

Ibrahim al-Jaafari expressed that Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of Iraq is looking forward to visiting China before long to further advance bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. Iraq thanks China for offering assistance and humanitarian aid to Iraq to its security and reconstruction. Iraq will take practical measures to guarantee the safety of Chinese organizations and personnel.

Ibrahim al-Jaafari notified China of Turkey dispatching military forces into northern Iraq, stressed that such act infringes Iraq's sovereignty, and expressed the hope that China will support the UN Security Council to convene an urgent meeting to urge Turkey to withdraw its army immediately.

Wang Yi expressed that Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected and protected, and that any anti-terrorism action should be conducted within the framework of the international law and in accordance with related resolutions of the UN Security Council, especially with the approval of the countries involved, and should be conducive to regional peace and stability.
