Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi of Iraq

On September 23, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi of Iraq at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out, China and Iraq enjoy a profound traditional friendship. The two sides celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship last year. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Iraqi side to constantly elevate bilateral strategic partnership to new highs from a new historical starting point.

Xi Jinping stressed, the Chinese side firmly supports the Iraqi side's efforts in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, and opposes any external force's interference in Iraq’s internal affairs. The Chinese side congratulates Iraq on its significant victory in the fight against terrorism and is willing to continue to actively support and help the Iraqi side in its counter-terrorism and reconstruction efforts to realize long-term national stability and development.

Xi Jinping emphasized, China was the first country to participate in Iraq’s economic reconstruction and continued its work for the longest period. China has the most widely distributed projects in Iraq in terms of geography and fields. Chinese companies remained in Iraq even when the security situation was at its worst. The Chinese side is ready to enhance the integration of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Iraq’s reconstruction plan, and push forward bilateral cooperation in petroleum, infrastructure construction and other fields. As both China and Iraq are ancient civilizations, the two sides should actively conduct people-to-people and cultural exchanges. It is hoped that the Iraqi side will continue to take tangible measures to ensure the safety of the Chinese side's institutions and personnel in Iraq. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen security and law-enforcement cooperation with the Iraqi side.

Xi Jinping stressed, the current situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region is complicated and sensitive. All parties concerned should keep calm, exercise restraint and solve differences and disputes through dialogue, negotiation and other peaceful means on the basis of mutual respect to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability. The Chinese side is willing to maintain communication with the Iraqi side and other parties concerned.

Adil Abdul-Mahdi expressed his warm congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He expressed, China has always firmly safeguarded its own national sovereignty, independence and dignity, and has made great achievements in development. In the current international landscape, China is an important pillar in safeguarding world peace, stability and harmony. As a nation that has experienced war and civil strife, Iraq sincerely appreciates China's valuable support for its counter-terrorism and reconstruction efforts. The Iraqi side is ready to deepen bilateral practical cooperation in various fields within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. On the regional situation, the Iraqi side is actively committed to easing tensions and avoiding war, and stands ready to enhance communication and coordination with the Chinese side in this regard.
