On the evening of September 4, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi put forward three proposals on the current situation of the Gulf region while attending the virtual meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Beijing.

First, push the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as soon as possible, which is the top priority to ease the situation. There is no way-out for unilateralism and the so-called “maximum pressure”. Not long ago, most member countries of the United Nations Security Council unequivocally opposed the US’s demand for “snapback” sanctions. This proves the old saying, “a just cause enjoys abundant support while an unjust cause finds little support.”

Second, the affairs in the Gulf region should be settled through dialogue and consultation by regional countries, which is the only path to realize security and stability in the Gulf region. All parties can, under the premise of maintaining the JCPOA, open up a dialogue platform for countries in the region, so as to push for the new consensus of safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Third, countries outside the regions should inject “positive energy” into the region to help it restore peace and tranquility rather than doing the opposite. All parties should proceed from the perspective of safeguarding multilateralism and international order, and make contributions instead of escalating the problem.
