On October 17, 2024, Special Envoy Zhai Jun of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue met with Ambassador of Lebanon to China Milia Jabbour and Ambassador of Jordan to China Hussam Al Husseini at the latter's request. They had an in-depth exchange of views on the current situation in the Middle East region.
Milia Jabbour said that Lebanon is currently facing unprecedented challenges and expects the international community to promote a ceasefire as soon as possible. She thanked China for providing emergency humanitarian assistance to Lebanon and looked forward to the international community's increased assistance and support for Lebanon. Hussam Al Husseini said that the Gaza conflict has been dragging on for a year, and the situation in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Lebanon has seriously escalated, posing a threat of conflict to the entire Middle East region. The Jordanian side calls on the international community to take effective measures to prevent the spread of the conflict and to promote an immediate deescalation of the situation. Both Milia Jabbour and Hussam Al Husseini highly appreciated China's impartial stance on regional hotspots such as the Gaza conflict and expected China to play a greater role in promoting a ceasefire and stopping the fighting as well as easing regional tensions.
Zhai Jun said that China is closely following the regional situation, and opposes actions that violate Lebanon's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity as well as moves that intensify and escalate conflicts. The Security Council resolution 1701 must be earnestly implemented. The current escalation of the regional situation is a negative spillover of the latest Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The pressing priority is to achieve an immediate, comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, release all hostages, and ensure humanitarian assistance. The ultimate way out is to push the Palestinian question back onto the track of a political settlement and to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution on the basis of the two-State solution. China does not want to see a further escalation of tensions in the region and will continue to play a constructive role in deescalating the situation.
