Incoming Prime Minister Saad Hariri of Lebanon Meets with Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on Syrian Issue Xie Xiaoyan

On December 5, 2016, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Syrian Issue Xie Xiaoyan visited Lebanon and met with incoming Prime Minister Saad Hariri of Lebanon, during which both sides exchanged in-depth views on current Syrian situation as well as its future development. H.E. Wang Kejian, Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon, was present.

Xie Xiaoyan expressed that in regard of the Syrian issue, the international community should adhere to the general direction of political settlement and stick to the main channel role of the mediation of the UN and the UN Security Council, so as to achieve a ceasefire and cessation of violence as soon as possible and restart t he Geneva peace talks. We should push forward the settlement of the Syrian issue through four parallel tracks, namely the realization of ceasefire, political negotiation, humanitarian assistance and joint campaign against terrorism. The Chinese side appreciates Lebanon’s great efforts in taking in Syrian refuges, and is willing to, together with all relevant parties including Lebanon, maintain communication and jointly advance the peaceful settlement of the Syrian issue at an early date.

Appreciating China’s stance on the Syrian issue, Saad Hariri thanked China for its humanitarian aid to Syrian refuges in Lebanon, and hoped that the Chinese side can play a bigger role in the Syrian issue.
