On April 6, 2023, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang had a group meeting in Beijing with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who came to China for a Saudi-Iran foreign ministers’ meeting.

Qin Gang said that last month, acting upon the important common understandings reached between President Xi Jinping and leaders of Saudi Arabia and Iran, and with the joint efforts of the three countries, the talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran in China made great achievements. Since then, Saudi Arabia and Iran have shown more goodwill for reconciliation, and carried out positive high-level interactions, fully demonstrating their constructive attitude and sincerity. China highly appreciates this and supports the two sides in continuously increasing mutual understanding and dispelling mistrust, and making new strides in improving bilateral relations in accordance with the roadmap and timetable laid out in their Beijing agreement.

Qin Gang said that the improvement of the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iran brings good news in three aspects:

First, it has provided stronger safeguards for regional peace and stability, and is of great significance to enhancing solidarity and cooperation among countries in the region and easing regional tensions.

Second, it has set an important example of countries resolving conflicts through dialogue and consultation, which meets the aspirations of the people and the trend of the times, and serves the common interests of countries in the region.

Third, it provides a case of best practice for promoting the Global Security Initiative and building a common community with a shared future for mankind. This may be a small step toward rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, but it represents a giant leap forward in humanity’s effort to rise above conflict and achieve reconciliation.

Qin Gang stressed that China firmly supports countries in the region in upholding strategic independence, strengthening solidarity and coordination, shaking off external interference, and keeping the future and destiny of the Middle East firmly in their own hands. China will continue to do its best to play its role as a reliable mediator with good faith, provide the necessary support to Saudi Arabia and Iran, and contribute its strength to promoting security and stability in the Middle East.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian commended China for shouldering its responsibility as a major country and supporting Saudi Arabia and Iran in successfully holding the Beijing talks. They also thanked China for once again giving them strong support for holding the important bilateral meeting. They noted they will move forward to implement the Beijing agreement, continue to improve bilateral relations, and work together to maintain regional peace, security and stability.

After the meeting, Qin Gang witnessed the signing of a joint statement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, with which the two countries announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.
