Wu Bangguo Meets with Prime Minister of Cape Verde

On August 26, 2004, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Wu Bangguo met in the Great Hall of the People with Prime Minister of the Republic of Cape Verde José Maria Pereira Neves.

Wu Bangguo said China and Cape Verde enjoy traditional friendly relations and the Chinese people nourish friendly feelings toward the people of Cape Verde. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cape Verde, bilateral relations have witnessed remarkable progress. The two sides understand, trust, and support each other politically and bilateral cooperation in economy, trade, culture and health has been constantly expanded. With increasingly deepened friendship between the two peoples, the two countries have shown mutual support and conducted close coordination in international affairs. The Chinese side thanked the government of Cape Verde for pursuing friendly policies toward China and supporting China's reunification cause. The development process of China-Cape Verde relations fully demonstrates that sound and stable bilateral relations are conducive to the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries and both peoples. China would like to make joint efforts with Cape Verde to promote relations between the two countries to a higher level.

Wu Bangguo said the exchanges between China's NPC and Cape Verde's parliament has played an important role as a bridge in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and promoting the development of friendly cooperative relations between the two countries. China's NPC has been attaching importance to developing friendly relations with Cape Verde's parliament and is willing to conduct enhanced exchanges and closer coordination with its parliament so as to contribute actively to the overall development of China-Cape Verde relations.

Neves said the friendship between Cape Verde and China enjoys a long history. Bilateral friendly relations have played an important role in the economic and social development of Cape Verde over a long period of time. Cape Verde regards China as an important partner and will continue to adhere to the "one China" policy and to support China's reunification cause. The Cape Verde side would like to further consolidate bilateral political relations and enhance cooperation in such fields as industry, agriculture, tourism, health and infrastructure construction so as to promote new developments in bilateral relations.

Wu Bangguo also briefed the guests on the situations of China economic and social development.
