On May 15, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with President of Cape Verde Pedro Pires, who is here in China for the annual board meetings of the African Development Bank (ADB) Group in Shanghai.

Wen said China and Cape Verde have always respected each other and treated each other as equals with effective cooperation in all fields since the two countries established diplomatic relations 31 years ago. Premier Wen and his Cape Verde counterpart Jose Maria das Neves exchanged views on comprehensively enhancing bilateral friendly cooperative ties during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held last November. Steady progress has been underway in implementing the relevant consensus in the six months after the summit, Wen said.

Pires thanked China for its long-term disinterested and precious support, adding that China is playing an increasingly important role in international and regional affairs. China is an important cooperative partner of Cape Verde and the whole African region for their economic growth, he said. Bilateral cooperation has left many impressions in Cape Verde, among which the first dam built with Chinese assistance in Cape Verde has played an active role in agricultural development of the country.

Pires reiterated that Cape Verde adheres to the one-China policy.

China attaches importance to the traditional friendship with Cape Verde, said Wen, who also called for expanded bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. Wen said in order to show the friendly feelings of the Chinese people to the people of Cape Verde, the Chinese government has decided to cancel all the debts owed by Cape Verde that matured at the end of 2005, expand the range of imports from Cape Verde that enjoy favorable tariff treatment and assist Cape Verde to build two country schools. Wen also hoped that both sides will strengthen exchanges and expand cooperation so as to push bilateral ties to one new level after another.
