On the morning of May 17, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks with visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Overseas Affairs of Cape Verde Victor Manuel Barbosa Borges in Beijing.

Yang said the friendship between the two countries goes back to ancient ties. The bilateral relations between China and Cape Verde have maintained sound and stable development based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence since the establishment of diplomatic ties 31 years ago. The two countries enjoyed fruitful cooperation in various fields and mutual support in international affairs, Yang said. He noted he appreciated the adherence of Cape Verde to the one-China policy and its support for China's reunification. China values its traditional friendship with Cape Verde and will strengthen friendly exchanges, mutual political trust and economic cooperation for common development, said Yang. He added China would enhance reciprocal cooperation with Cape Verde within the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum and the Forum on Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. China will also carry out closer consultations and coordination with Cape Verde in international affairs to further promote bilateral friendly relations and cooperation, he said.

Borges thanked for China's long-standing assistance to Cape Verde, reaffirming that the government of Cape Verde would adhere to the one-China policy and work with the Chinese government to promote world peace. Cape Verde is striving to graduate from one of the most undeveloped countries, Borges said, expressing hope that the two countries will strengthen cooperation between their governments and more Chinese companies can invest there, especially in energy, infrastructure development and agricultural cooperation.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

On the same day, Borges also met with Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wei Jianguo and both sides signed several documents on governmental economic and technological cooperation and other areas.
