On February 22, 1964, China and the Republic of the Congo established diplomatic relations, and since then the friendly relations between the two sides have been developing smoothly. President Xi Jinping visited the Congo in March 2013, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi visited the Congo in January 2017 and January 2025. President Denis Sassou-N'guesso has visited China 17 times. During President Denis Sassou-N'guesso's visit to China in July 2016, China-Congo relations were elevated to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. President Denis Sassou-N'guesso attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September 2018 and paid a state visit to China. In October 2023, he attended the Third "One Belt, One Road" Summit for International Cooperation, and in September 2024, he attended the FOCAC Beijing Summit and paid a state visit to China.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has successively assisted the Congo in building stadiums, parliament buildings, hospitals, hydropower stations, an urban water supply, a university library, a China-Congo Friendship Hospital and other complete projects.
The Chinese and Congolese governments signed an agreement in 1984 to establish the China-Congo Economic, Trade and Technical Mixed Commission. The 11th meeting of the Mixed Commission was held in Beijing in June 2024. In March 2000, the two governments signed an investment promotion and protection agreement. In September 2018, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on jointly building the "Belt and Road" and an agreement to avoid double taxation. In September 2024, the two sides signed a cooperation plan on jointly promoting the "Belt and Road", a framework agreement on jointly developing an economic partnership, and issued a joint statement on deepening a comprehensive strategic partnership and building a high-level China-Congo community of shared future.
Since 1982, Chinese companies have begun to contract labor services in Congo. In 2024, the trade volume between the two countries was 40.63 billion yuan.
In October 1964, July 1980 and March 2000, the Chinese and Congolese governments signed cultural cooperation agreements, and carried out various forms of cultural exchange activities within this framework. In 2008, the Henan Art Troupe visited the Congo. In 2009, the Congolese Song and Dance Troupe came to China to participate in the 9th "Meeting in Beijing" Gala and the 2nd Chengdu International Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival. In 2010, the Congolese Minister of Culture was invited to visit China, the Henan Shaolin Temple Wushu Monks Group visited the Congo for performances, and the Congolese Art Troupe came to China to attend the Congolese National Pavilion Day at the Shanghai World Expo. In June 2012, the Confucius Institute was established at the University of Ngouabi in Congo. In March 2013, the "Perceiving China" series of cultural activities was held in Brazzaville. In April 2014, the Nanjing Little Red Flower Art Troupe visited the Congo for performances. In July 2016, the two sides signed the 2017-2019 Implementation Plan of the China-Congo Cultural Agreement. In May 2019, the Nanjing Art Troupe visited the Congo for performances.
Since 1975, China has provided scholarships to the Congolese students every year.
China has sent medical teams to the Congo since 1967, withdrew them in 1997 due to the Congolese civil war, and resumed them in 1999. So far, 30 batches of 964 people have been sent.
On October 10, 2017, the Chinese Navy's Peace Ark hospital ship, which was carrying out the "Harmony-2017" mission, paid a friendly visit to the Congo. In September 2024, the Chinese Navy's Peace Ark hospital ship paid a 7-day friendly visit and provided humanitarian medical services in the Congo.
