I. Political Relations
The People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire established diplomatic relations on March 2,1983. In September 2024, the two nations elevated their ties to strategic partnership.
In January 2024, H.E.Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited Côte d’Ivoire. In September 2024, H.E.Vice President Tiemoko Meyliet Koné of Côte d’Ivoire attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
II. Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China has assisted to construct projects including the Parliament House (la Maison des Députés) , Guiguidou Farmland Water-Conservancy Project, and the National Olympic Stadium in Côte d’Ivoire .
The two governments signed trade agreements in 1984 and 1996. In 2023, bilateral trade reached 5.28 billion USD, marking a year-on-year increase of 21%. China primarily exports chemical products, steel and high-tech goods, and imports agricultural products, nickel ore, crude oil and related commodities.
III. Exchanges and Cooperation in Cultural, Educational and Other fields
In 1992, China and Côte d’Ivoire signed a cultural cooperation agreement.
China started to offer scholarships to Ivorian students since 1985. In May 2015, the Confucius Institute at Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Abidjan was officially established. In 2020, Tianjin University of Technology and Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny held an inauguration ceremony for their jointly built Luban Workshop. In November 2023, Heilongjiang Agricultural Engineering Vocational College and Lycée Professionnel de Jacqueville signed an agreement to establish another Luban Workshop.
