China and Guinea Bissau

I. Political Relations

The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations on March 15, 1974. The relations were suspended in May 1990 when Guinea-Bissau established so-called "diplomatic relation" with the Taiwan region. On April 23, 1998, China and Guinea-Bissau resumed diplomatic relations. In July 2024, China and Guinea-Bissau established strategic partnership.

H.E. President Umaro Sissoco Embaló paid a state visit to China in July 2024, and attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September.

II. Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation

China has assisted to construct projects such as stadiums, hospitals, and rice technology promotion stations in Guinea-Bissau. After the resumption of diplomatic ties in 1998, China and Guinea-Bissau have engaged in practical cooperation across multiple fields.

In 2023, the bilateral trade volume between China and Guinea-Bissau reached 63 million USD, marking a year-on-year increase of 13.9%.

III. Exchanges and Cooperation in Cultural, Educational and Other Fields

In 1982, the governments of China and Guinea-Bissau signed cultural agreement.

China started to offer scholarships to Guinea-Bissau students since 1977. 

China has been dispatching medical teams to Guinea-Bissau since 1976.
