Hu Jintao Meets with Liberian Parliament Leaders

On February 1, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Liberian Vice President and Senate President Joseph Boakai, House Speaker Edwin Snowe and President Pro Tempore of the Senate Isaac Nyenabo in Monrovia. Both sides held talks on pushing for in-depth development of China-Liberia ties and expanding and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

Hu said the two peoples share a profound traditional friendship. Since the resumption of diplomatic ties in 2003, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly with cooperation carried out in all areas. China cherishes the friendship and friendly cooperation with Liberia and is ready to work with Liberia to build up mutual understanding and trust, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields and push their friendly relations and cooperation to one new level after another.

The National People's Congress (NPC) of China and Liberia's parliament once had a history of friendly exchanges, the Chinese president said. The exchanges and cooperation between the legislatures of the two countries are conducive not only to the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, but also to the development of bilateral relations, said Hu. He said the NPC is willing to expand exchanges and cooperation with the Liberian parliament to contribute to the development of bilateral relations.

Boakai said President Hu came with the friendliness of the Chinese people. This visit shows that China attaches great importance to relations with Liberia, he said, adding Liberia hopes to broaden and deepen the all-around cooperation with China.

Snowe said that the Liberian House of Representatives adheres to the one-China policy and is dedicated to boosting Liberia-China relations.

Nyenabo said Chinese enterprises' investment in Liberia is of great benefit to Liberians. He added that the exchanges and cooperation between the Liberian and Chinese legislatures have helped legislative work of the Liberian parliament.

Liberian lawmakers also thanked China for assistance in the fields of agriculture, medical health, women and children's causes and sports facilities.

Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan attended the meeting.
