Wen Jiabao Meets with African Leaders

On the evening of November 7 and on the morning of November 8, local time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held separate meetings in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt with presidents of Zimbabwe, Sudan, Liberia, Comoros and the Republic of Congo and prime ministers of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At these meetings, the Chinese premier and the above leaders praised China-Africa traditional friendship and spoke highly of the new progress in the development of China-Africa relations. They held that the smooth implementation of all the measures announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has benefited Chinese and African people and given fresh impetus to the development of China-Africa relations. The African leaders reiterated that their governments will adhere to the one-China policy and give firm support to China on issues concerning its core interests, which Wen appreciated. Wen said China and African countries should take the current ministerial conference as an opportunity to strengthen solidarity and join hands to tackle such global issues and challenges as the international financial crisis and climate change to better achieve common development. The Chinese and African leaders agreed to make unremitting efforts for deepening a new type of strategic partnership between China and Africa.

On November 7, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.

When meeting with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Wen said that China, out of its friendly feelings towards Zimbabwean people, has, to the best of its capability, provided Zimbabwe with assistance which will help improve the Zimbabwean people's livelihood and advance that country's rehabilitation and rebuilding. China will continue to strengthen cooperation with Zimbabwe to push forward bilateral ties. China hopes that Zimbabwe's process of domestic reconciliation and cooperation will continue to make progress and the country will achieve national stability and development. The international community should create favorable conditions to this end.

Mugabe said Zimbabwean people thanked China for its support and aid and cherished the traditional friendship between both sides. He said Zimbabwe is ready to maintain exchange with China and strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture and manufacturing.

On November 7, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.

During his meeting with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, Wen said China and Sudan share traditional and friendly relations and bilateral pragmatic cooperation between China and Sudan in petroleum and other areas has been conducted on the basis of mutual benefit. Both sides should further expand cooperation and push for all-round, in-depth development of bilateral ties. China is ready to continue to play its positive constructive role for peace, stability and development of Sudan.

Al-Bashir told Wen that Chinese investments have brought tangible benefits to local people and are welcomed by Sudanese people. Sudan hopes to strengthen cooperation with China on energy, agriculture and infrastructure construction. The Sudanese president spoke highly of China's position on and its humanitarian aid to Darfur, adding that Sudan will continue to advance Darfur's political process and the north-south peace process in Sudan.

On November 7, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.

During the meeting with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Wen said that the relations between China and Liberia have been developing smoothly since the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries. China is willing to continue providing Liberia with aid within its ability in the African country's post-war reconstruction. China will encourage competent and reputable businesses to invest in Liberia and do well in key cooperation projects in a bid to push bilateral friendly cooperative relations to a higher level.

Hailing the sound Liberia-China relations, the Liberian president said China's assistance has played an important role in the country's economic development and social progress and the Liberian people have benefited enormously from it. Liberia will continue to commit to advancing friendly cooperative relations with China.

During his meeting with Comoran President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi, Wen said China and the Comoros are good friends with mutual trust and their relationship can serve as a role model for friendly cooperation between big and small countries. China attaches importance to the development needs of the Comoros and is ready to earnestly push forward bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the Comoran people.

The Comoran president said despite the distance keeping the two countries apart, the Comoran people feel an affinity to China. The Comoros hoped to further cooperation with China as part of his country's efforts to reduce poverty and achieve growth.

When meeting with Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso, Wen said China is ready to continuously enrich strategic cooperation with the Republic of Congo and join hands with other African nations to address global challenges.

Sassou said the Republic of Congo attaches importance to China's important role on the international arena and appreciates China's active efforts to promote Africa's development and cope with the global financial crisis and climate change along with Africa. The Republic of Congo is ready to enhance strategic cooperation with China.

On November 7, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.

During the meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Wen said China-Ethiopia economic and trade cooperation has scored remarkable results. China is ready to actively discuss new areas and new projects of cooperation with Ethiopia. China understands and supports the positions and reasonable appeals of African countries on climate change and is ready to coordinate efforts with the African side in order to push for progress at the United Nations Copenhagen conference on the basis of the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities."

Meles said Ethiopia and China share profound friendship and close cooperation. He hoped that China will further participate in Ethiopia's economic construction. The Ethiopian prime minister said his country would strengthen communication and cooperation with China on climate change.

On November 7, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Democratic Republic of Congo Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt.

During the meeting with Democratic Republic of Congo Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito, Wen said that their countries' economies are highly complementary and there is a bright prospect for mutually beneficial cooperation between them. He believed that with the joint efforts of both sides, bilateral relations will get closer and more fruitful. China is ready to play a constructive role in promoting lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Democratic Republic of Congo prime minister told the Chinese premier that the Congolese people deem China a sincere friend. The Democratic Republic of Congo hopes to maintain high-level exchanges with China and advance bilateral cooperation within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Chinese investments are welcomed in such sectors as agriculture, hydropower, infrastructure and mineral resources.
