1. Bilateral political relations
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Mozambique established diplomatic relations on 25 June 1975. Since then, relations between the two countries have developed smoothly. In May 2016, China and Mozambique established a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
In recent years, there have been frequent high-level exchanges and interactions between the two countries. Main visits from the Chinese side include: Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (2018); Xu Qiliang, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission and General of the Air Force (2019); Cai Dafeng, Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (2020); Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs (2022); and Losang Jamcan, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (2023).
Main visits from the Mozambican side include: President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi (September 2018 to attend FOCAC Beijing Summit, April 2019 to attend the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and September 2024 to attend the FOCAC Beijing Summit), Prime Minister Adriano Malaiane (in 2019 as Minister of Economy and Finance , October 2023 to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation), vice president of Mozambican Assembly Helder Ernesto Injojo (2023), Secretary-General of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) Roque Silva Samuel (2023), Defense Minister Cristovao Chume (2024).
2. Bilateral economic and trade relations
China and Mozambique have signed trade agreements and investment protection agreements. In 2001, China and Mozambique established the economic and trade joint committee mechanism. In 2024, the bilateral trade volume is US$5.19 billion, of which China's exports is US$3.38 billion and imports is US$1.81 billion. In December 2024, China started to give Mozambique zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines.
3. Exchanges and cooperation in other areas
China and Mozambique have carried out various forms of cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science and technology, and public health, which have achieved fruitful results. In April 2011, China and Mozambique established the Confucius Institute at the University of Mondlane in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Since 1976, China has sent 25 batches of medical teams to Mozambique, with a total number of 371 medical personnel. In January 2016, the two countries signed an agreement on mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
China's Hubei Province and Mogaza Province, Hainan Province and Nampula Province are sister provinces. Both Shanghai and Chengdu are sister cities with Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. In September 2014, Mozambique established a Consulate General in Macau,China.
