President Xi Jinping Holds Talks with President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria Stressing to Push Forward New Model of China-Africa Strategic Partnership for Continuously In-Depth Development

On July 10, 2013, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria at the Great Hall of the People. The two heads of sate exchanged in-depth views and reached broad consensus on developing China-Nigeria relationship as well as China-Africa relations.

Xi Jinping expressed, Nigeria is a major country of important influence in Africa and the common task of seeking national development and prosperity links our two countries more closely. In recent years, China-Nigeria relationship has shown a sound momentum of comprehensive and healthy development. The two countries enjoy wide-ranging mutually beneficial cooperation with remarkable results. It fully indicates the high level and inherent vitality of the bilateral relations. In the new situation, China is willing to further enrich the content of strategic partnership with Nigeria, to consolidate traditional friendship, to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, to strengthen mutual support and to seek common development in a bid to better benefit both peoples.

Xi Jinping raised the following proposals for further developing China-Nigeria strategic partnership.

First, to strengthen high-level exchanges, to continue to understand and support each other on issues concerning the core interests of the two countries, and to deepen political mutual trust and cooperation. To enhance friendly exchanges between the government departments, legislative bodies, political parties and at local levels, to learn from each other for governance experience and to firmly grasp the overall direction of China-Nigeria friendship.

Second, to push forward practical cooperation and to achieve complementary advantages and common development. To strengthen cooperation in the fields of infrastructure construction, trade, investment, energy, aerospace, agriculture, economic and trade cooperation zones development, defence and security. China will continue to try to resolve bilateral trade imbalance and to do personnel training for Nigeria. The Chinese government supports Chinese businesses to carry out cooperation in Nigeria and encourages them to teach technology to the local people. Hope the Nigerian side will provide facilitation and opportunities for fair competition on this.

Third, to expand people-to-people exchanges, and to cement the foundation of public support for friendly relations. To deepen cultural cooperation. to jointly build up Nigeria Cultural Center in China, China Cultural Center in Nigeria as well as Confucius Institute in Nigeria. To deepen exchanges and cooperation between the sports circles, media, universities, think tanks and youth. To protect the security and legitimate rights and interest of each other's citizens and institutions abiding by laws.

Fourth, to strengthen cooperation in international and regional affairs, to keep close coordination in the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other multilateral institutions and to safeguard common interest.

Xi Jinping said that Africa has bright future for development. China and Africa share weal and woe. China needs Africa, and Africa needs China as well. China will unswervingly carry on the traditional friendship and enhance solidarity and cooperation with Africa. In the great cause of peace and development, China will always be a reliable friend and partner for Africa. China will work with African countries, including Nigeria, to ensure an overall implementation of the outcomes of the Fifth Ministerial Meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, to push forward the new model of China-Africa strategic partnership for continuously in-depth development.

Jonathan fully agreed with Xi Jinping's proposals on further developing bilateral relations. He said that Nigeria and China enjoy sound development of bilateral relations and the two countries have conducted good cooperation in bilateral and multilateral fields. China is a reliable friend and partner of African countries including Nigeria. Nigeria and China share broad range of common interests and have great potential for cooperation. Nigeria is firmly committed to developing friendly relations with China and stands ready to work with China to improve the cooperative mechanism and to expand mutually beneficial cooperation. China has long offered valuable support to Africa, which strongly promoted peace, stability and development of Africa. Nigeria is grateful for this and is willing to join hands with China to push for new achievements in Africa-China cooperation.

Following the talks, the heads of state attended the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents in the fields of economy and trade, finance and culture.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcome ceremony for Jonathan at the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan, Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Wan E'xiang, Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, Qi Xuchun, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Standing Committee, and others were present.
