2016-12-26 09:32

On December 26, 2016, after holding talks in Beijing, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Urbino Botelho of Sao Tome and Principe jointly met the press.

Wang Yi expressed that today is a day to remember. Foreign Minister Urbino Botelho and I signed the Joint Communiqué between the People's Republic of China and the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations just now. From this moment on, the two countries officially resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, which was suspended for nearly 20 years.

Wang Yi pointed out that there is only one China in the world. The government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. This principle is not only affirmed by Resolution 2758 adopted at the 26th UN General Assembly in October, 1971, but has become the extensive consensus in the international community as well as the norm governing international relations, which reflects both the will of the people and the trend of the times. China is delighted to see that, after so many years, the government of Sao Tome and Principe could actively follow the historical trend, focus on both realistic and long-term interests of their own people and make the correct decision of returning to the one-China principle. The Chinese side highly appreciates this.

Wang Yi said that the resumption of diplomatic relations between both countries will lead to mutual benefit and win-win results for China, Sao Tome and Principe, and all countries in Africa. From now on, on the one hand, China has a new friend in the international community, and the big family of China-Africa cooperation incorporates a new member; on the other hand, Sao Tome and Principe will obtain full support and assistance from China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing country in the world. The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Sao Tome and Principe will certainly bring tangible benefits to both peoples, especially to the people of Sao Tome and Principe, and add new impetus to China-Africa mutually beneficial cooperation.

Wang Yi noted that during our sincere, friendly and fruitful talks, Foreign Minister Urbino Botelho and I exchanged in-depth views on the future development of bilateral relations and reached extensive consensus.

The two countries agreed that the one-China principle is, at any time, the foundation of bilateral relations, which must be unswervingly upheld.

Both countries agreed to understand and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns, as well as firmly safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Both sides agreed to conduct cooperation in various fields based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win results. China is willing to, within its ability, support Sao Tome and Principe's efforts in pursuing economic and social development and improving people's livelihood.

The two countries agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in such areas as education, culture, tourism, think tank, media, youth and women, and deepen mutual understanding between the two peoples, so as to lay a solid public opinion foundation for the development of bilateral relations.
