Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada of Sao Tome and Principe

On April 14, 2017, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada of Sao Tome and Principe.

Xi Jinping pointed out that relations between both countries have opened up a new chapter, and Sao Tome and Principe's return to the big family of China-Africa friendly cooperation complies with the trend of the times. Highly appreciating the important contributions made by Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada in realizing the normalization of bilateral relations, China is willing to work with Sao Tome and Principe to jointly push forward friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields between both countries and the establishment of a comprehensive cooperative partnership featuring equality, mutual trust, and win-win cooperation.

Xi Jinping stressed that both sides should deepen political mutual trust, intensify communication and cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as governments, legislative institutions and political parties, and understand and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. Both sides need to expand practical cooperation. The Chinese side is ready to give prior support to the improvement of Sao Tome and Principe's national comprehensive development plan, focus on carrying out mutually beneficial cooperation in three major areas covering tourism, fishery and agriculture, help Sao Tome and Principe to build three-pillar guarantees including infrastructure construction, human resources development and security capacity building, and realize its independent and sustainable development. The two countries should actively carry out people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, health care, think tanks, media, youth and women, so as to continuously enhance mutual understanding and friendship between both countries and consolidate bilateral friendly public opinion and social foundation. China stands ready to, together with Sao Tome and Principe, conduct exchanges and cooperation in security fields such as combating piracy and transnational organized crimes, and enhances communication and coordination on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change, peace and development in Africa, and other international and regional issues.

Xi Jinping stated that I propose to develop China-Africa relations in accordance with the principles of sincerity, practical results, affinity and good faith and the values of friendship, justice and shared interests. The core principle of such concepts is to closely combine China's development with the supporting of Africa's development, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. China is willing to support Africa to be committed to devoting itself to realizing independent and sustainable development through unity, self-improvement, development and revitalization, so as to jointly boost the establishment of China-Africa community of shared future and interests.

Patrice Trovoada expressed that people of both countries enjoy a long-standing friendship. Sao Tome and Principe's people never forget the help and support given by the Chinese people. The resumption of diplomatic relations with China has received extensive support in Sao Tome and Principe. Sao Tome and Principle firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and highly appreciates China's policies toward Africa featuring sincerity, practical results, affinity and good faith. The country is willing to work with China, following the spirit of mutual respect and trust, enhance high-level exchanges and cooperation in various fields including economy, trade, infrastructure, tourism and security, deepen traditional friendship between Africa and China, and intensify mutual support in international affairs.
