I. Political Relations
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Senegal established diplomatic relations on December 7, 1971. The relations were suspended when Senegal signed a communiqué of so-called "resumption of diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region in January 1996. On October 25, 2005, China and Senegal signed a communiqué to resume diplomatic relations. In September 2016, China and Senegal established comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
In September 2024, H.E. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye paid a state visit to China and co-chaired with H.E. President Xi Jinping the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
II. Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation
China has assisted to construct projects such as the Museum of Black Civilizations, and National Wrestling Arena in Senegal. The bilateral trade volume in 2023 amounted to 5.57 billion USD, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 33.3%. China mainly exported tea, daily necessities, building materials, and imported agricultural and fishery products as well as mineral ores.
III. Exchanges and Cooperation in Culture, Education, Health, and Other Fields
China and Senegal signed cultural cooperation agreement in 1981. Cultural delegations from both countries have exchanged visits on multiple occasions.
China started to offer scholarships to students from Senegal since 1973. In December 2012, the Confucius Institute at the University of Dakar was officially established.
Since 1975, China has dispatched 20 medical teams to Senegal, with a total of 312 medical professionals.
