Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan's Visit to Seychelles

At the invitation of Foreign Minister Geremie Bonnelame of Seychelles, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan paid an official visit to Seychelles from January 17 to 20. Acting President, James Michel (Vice President and Minister of Finance and Economic Planning) met with him and Foreign Minister Bonnelame had talks with him. The two sides exchanged notes on providing free loans to Seychelles by the Chinese Government.


During the meetings and talks, Foreign Minister Tang expressed his satisfaction over the sound and smooth development of China-Seychelles relations and fruitful cooperation in all the fields. He said that China and Seychelles had fostered friendship featuring mutual respect, mutual assistance, mutual trust and treating each other as equals since the establishment of diplomatic ties 24 years ago. He reiterated that China attached great importance to the friendship and friendly relations and cooperation with Seychelles. He also expressed appreciation and gratitude to the Seychelles Government for its adherence to the "One China" policy. China stood ready to join hands with Seychelles to further expand and deepen the cooperation between the two countries in all the fields with a view to promoting the sound and stable development of bilateral relations in the new century. Foreign Minister Tang briefed the leaders of Seychelles on what prompted China to host the "China-Africa Cooperation Forum- Ministerial Meeting Beijing 2000" in the coming October.


Acting President Michel and Foreign Minister Bonnelame extended warm welcome to Foreign Minister Tang for his visit to Seychelles at the dawn of the new millennium. Acting President Michel emphasized that it was the set policy of Seychelles to adhere to the "One China" policy and Seychelles supported the reunification cause of China and cherished the hope that the Taiwan question should be resolved at an early date. Foreign Minister Bonnelame gave positive appraisal to Seychelles-China relations. He went on to say that the two countries had maintained friendly relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties. The Seychelles Government and people expressed gratitude to China's generous assistance to the economic and social development of Seychelles. It regarded China as a true friend. Foreign Minister reaffirmed that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an unalienable part of China. Seychelles stood ready to step up solidarity and cooperation with China in bilateral and international affairs and promote further development of bilateral relations. The Seychelles leaders were of the view that it was both highly necessary and timely to convene the "China-Africa Cooperation Forum- Ministerial Meeting Beijing 2000" and volunteered full participation on the part of Seychelles.


The two sides exchanged views about the African question and international situation and extensive consensus was reached.


Seychelles was the last leg of Foreign Minister Tang's five-nation African tour hence ending his third official visit to Africa since he became the Foreign Minister. On January 20, Foreign Minister Tang left Seychelles for home.
