On July 28, 2010, Seychelles President James Michel met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo in Victoria.

Michel said Seychelles-China ties are a model for bilateral relations in the world. Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the island country three years ago significantly pushed forward bilateral ties, and the Seychelles people will forever remember the historic event, Michel said. The Seychelles side sincerely thanked China for its strong support of Seychelles’ economic development, he said. Michel said Seychelles would continue to stick to the one-China policy, and back China's just cause of peaceful reunification. He congratulated China for successfully hosting the Shanghai World Expo. Seychelles is proud of and delighted with China’s economic and social development, he said, urging both sides to continue to support each other on the road to common development. Seychelles is willing to further develop its special and close friendly cooperative relations with China, and strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, he said. The president said his nation is willing to increase people-to-people exchanges, regards itself as the gate and bridge for China to Africa, and aims to positively push forward China-Africa ties. Seychelles will hold celebrations on the 150th anniversary of the arrival of first Chinese people to Seychelles in 2012 in a bid to further carry forward friendship with China. Michel also thanked for China’s support of Seychelles’ efforts to combat piracy.

“During my current visit to Africa, I can see that every place is seeking for development wherever I go,” said Dai. He said he was happy to see different ethnic groups in Seychelles live in harmony, and the Seychelles people have made new achievements in economic and social development. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1976, China-Seychelles relations have developed healthily and steadily despite the changing international situation, Dai said, adding that high-level officials of the two countries, particularly in recent years, have frequently exchanged visits and energetically boosted bilateral ties. As said by President Hu Jintao, China-Seychelles relations are truly good enough to serve as a model for friendly cooperation between countries with different size and social system. Such a high level of China-Seychelles relations is attributed to the fact that both sides have always adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, held that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are equal in the political front, sought for mutual benefit, win-win outcome and common development in the economic field and upheld coexistence of multiple cultures, mutual respect and mutual exchange in the cultural area. This is precious experience of the 34 years of China-Seychelles relations and is worth cherishing and carrying forward. Help is mutual and Seychelles has also offered China a lot of support on many issues over the years. China will continue to provide assistance within its ability to Seychelles, complete their cooperative programs within the framework of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum or being agreed to by the two countries in a timely manner and with good quality and encourage and support Chinese businesses to invest in Seychelles.

Dai said China thanks for Seychelles’ readiness to provide a platform for China-Africa friendly cooperation by making use of its own advantageous geographic location. China also supports Seychelles’ efforts to combat piracy and safeguard peace and stability of the island country’s adjacent waters.
