On October 20, 2011, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with visiting President of Seychelles James Alix Michel at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi said both peoples share a profound traditional friendship. He hailed the healthy growth of China-Seychelles ties since the forging of diplomatic ties 35 years ago, citing frequent high-level exchanges, enhanced political trust and mutual support on major issues concerning each other's core interests. He appreciated Seychelles' firm support and help for China in combating Somali pirates and rescuing hijacked Chinese crew. The two countries have conducted fruitful cooperation in areas such as culture, education, public health, sports and tourism with close exchanges and increasing friendship between both peoples.

Xi said in recent years, bilateral pragmatic cooperation has been carried out in all areas, which further consolidates the foundation of bilateral ties. "The development of China-Seychelles friendly ties not only meets the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples, but also sets an example for equality, solidarity and cooperation between large and small countries," he said. China is ready to work with Seychelles to push forward bilateral friendly cooperative relations.

Xi also spoke positively of China-Seychelles cooperation within the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). "We are willing to keep close coordination with African countries, including Seychelles, to implement all FOCAC follow-up actions, bring benefits to Chinese and African peoples, and boost the further growth of the new China-Africa strategic partnership," he added.

In response, Michel said Seychelles-China relations have always maintained a sound development momentum. Bilateral relations on the basis of sincerity and friendship provide strong support for development and cooperation of both sides. He said his country was grateful for China's disinterested support and help in Seychelles' economic and social development, which had facilitated the country's development and its efforts to counter the global financial crisis. Seychelles admires China's development achievements, he said, adding China's success is the success of developing countries as a whole. He vowed to boost stronger relations with China and play a bridging role for developing relations between China and African countries. Seychelles will as always stick to the one-China policy, he added.
