Bilateral Political Relations
The People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the United Republic of Tanzania on April 26, 1964. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China-Tanzania relations have maintained healthy and stable development over the long term. In November 2022, the two nations established a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
In March 2013, President Xi Jinping visited Tanzania. From November 2 to 4, 2022, President Samia Suluhu Hassan paid a state visit to China. In August 2023, during the 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa, President Xi Jinping held a meeting with President Samia Suluhu Hassan. In September 2024, President Xi Jinping and President Samia Suluhu Hassan met on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.
Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations and Economic-Technical Cooperation
China began to provide assistance to Tanzania in 1964. Major aid projects include TAZARA Railway, Friendship Textile Factory and so on. In 2023, the bilateral import and export volume of China and Tanzania has reached 8.779 billion US dollars, an increase of 8.9% year-on-year. China mainly exports machinery and equipment, vehicles and daily necessities, and mainly imports wood, sisal fiber, rawhide leather and seafood. During President Samia Suluhu Hassan's state visit to China in November 2022, the two sides signed several cooperation documents on trade, investment, development cooperation, digital economy, green development and blue economy.
Exchanges and Cooperation in Culture, Education, Health and Other Fields
China and Tanzania have signed agreements on education, health, culture and tourism. China began to receive Tanzanian students in the 1960s. In 2000, the two sides signed an agreement on higher education development cooperation projects. The Chinese side has assisted the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology in building a materials laboratory and a computer laboratory, and has sent teachers to teach there on many occasions. So far, China has sent more than 50 medical teams of nearly 2,000 doctors to the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar Island, and currently 11 and 21 medical team members are working in the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar Island, respectively. China has two Confucius Institutes and one Confucius Classroom in Tanzania, namely the Confucius Institute at the University of Dodoma hosted by Zhengzhou Institute of Aviation Industry Management, the Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam hosted by Zhejiang Normal University and the Confucius Classroom at Zanzibar Public University. Tanzania is a destination country for group tourism of Chinese citizens. China and Tanzania have five pairs of sister provinces and cities, namely, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region - Arusha Province, Changzhou - Dar es Salaam, Haikou - Zanzibar, Xiangtan - Msoma and Loudi - Kilondoni.
