China and Romania

The People's Republic of China and Romania established diplomatic relations on 5 October 1949. The two countries have been maintaining friendly cooperative relations for a long time. In October 1971, at the 26th United Nations General Assembly, Romania, as a co-sponsor, voted in favor of the resolution on the restoration of all lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations. In 2004, the two countries established a comprehensive friendly and cooperative partnership. In October 2009, President Xi Jinping (the then Vice President) paid an official visit to Romania. From 2012 to 2019, the leaders of the two countries held multiple bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Meetings of Heads of Government of China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC). In February 2021, the Romanian senior representative attended the China-CEEC Summit hosted by President Xi Jinping via video link. In July 2024, Vice Foreign Minister Deng Li held political consultations with State Secretary of Romanian Foreign Ministry Traian Laurentiu Hristea in Beijing. In September 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

China and Romania have signed many cooperation documents such as the Economic Cooperation Agreement and the Investment Protection Agreement. The two governments have established the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation and the Joint Working Group on Infrastructure Cooperation. In December 2019, Bank of China Bucharest Branch was opened. In 2023, China-Romania bilateral trade volume totaled US$10.56 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 1.4%. 

China and Romania maintain fruitful cooperation and frequent exchanges in culture, science, and education. The two governments have established the Intergovernmental Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation. In 2019, China-Romania Agricultural Science and Technology Park and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre were both inaugurated in Romania, and Romania participated as the guest of honour in the Beijing International Book Fair. In 2020, China efficiently facilitated Romania's procurement of anti-COVID-19 supplies. In 2022, Romanian Sports Minister Eduard Novak came to China to watch the Beijing Winter Olympics. In 2023, Romania hosted the Seminar on China-CEEC higher education cooperation. China Cultural Centre in Bucharest was inaugurated in May 2024.
